SPARTANBURG, SC – Around the country, hospitals will celebrate National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week (May 6 – 12, 2018). It’s a celebration of the dedicated staff of hospitals, hospices and health care institutions everywhere.
Mary Black Health System- Spartanburg (MBHS-S) will celebrate our “Heroes in Healthcare” at hospital appreciation events including a cook-out, candy-run and ice cream social. MBHS-S values the care, compassion and daily dedication of each employee, and we are proud to share the statewide recognition received by one of our physician heroes in healthcare.
Mary Black Health System neonatologist Sami Elhassani, MD, is this year’s SCMA “Physician-of-the-Year-for-Community Service.” According to SCMA Chairman of the Board, Dr. Todd Schlesinger, “When they placed him into nomination, his colleagues at the Spartanburg County Medical Society stated his pure dedication to those around him and unparalleled service to the health of children born prematurely made him an easy choice for this award.” He was also honored for his volunteer efforts abroad teaching midwives in Belize the importance of caring for premature newborns, and for his service in leadership to multiple organizations. Having served the Spartanburg community for more than 40 years, Dr. Elhassani was one of South Carolina’s first neonatologists. Among his many honors and appointments, he received the March of Dimes “Excellence in Medicine” in 2012.
“I am honored to work among the many heroes in healthcare like Dr. Elhassani. Our staff, physicians, volunteers and Board of Trustees are dedicated to provide safe, reliable, quality health care for every patient - every time. We value the trust the Spartanburg community places in us. It’s a privilege,” says Parkes Coggins, CEO (MBHS-S).
